It’s fitting that a movie based on the life of the “Lizard King” zooms through the desert.

Written, directed and produced by Robert Saitzyk (Godspeed), the musical drama The Last Beat is based on The Doors frontman Jim Morrison’s last days in Paris in 1971. The movie analogue is Jay Douglas (Shawn Andrews of Dazed and Confused), an American rock star who takes his poetry to France for inspiration and becomes embroiled in a love triangle.

Before he heads to Europe, Jay drives speeds along a desert highway in one of the early scenes, a dialogue-free sequence that sets the mood but also ethereally showcases one of the women he’s involved with, Valerie Eason (Cameron Richardson). The other? The chic countess known as Clemence (Martha Higareda).

With a cast that includes Kevin Corrigan and Seymour Cassel, The Last Beat begins a crowdfunding campaign March 8. Visit the movie’s Facebook page for more updates and release details.

She lives on Love Street
Lingers long on Love Street
She has a house and garden
I would like to see what happens

She has robes and she has monkeys
Lazy diamond studded flunkies
She has wisdom and knows what to do
She has me and she has you

She has wisdom and knows what to do
She has me and she has you

I see you live on Love Street
There’s this store where the creatures meet
I wonder what they do in there
Summer Sunday and a year
I guess I like it fine, so far

She lives on Love Street
Lingers long on Love Street
She has a house and garden
I would like to see what happens

Original copy of the Compass, the annual for George Washington High School, Alexandria, Virginia (Volume 26), for 1961, hardcover, 8 x 10.75, 199 pages, signed in blue ballpoint at the top of the first page, “J. Morrison.” Morrison’s clean-cut image is located in the senior class photos. Remainder of the book bears many signatures and inscriptions to the book’s original owner. In good condition, with moderate to heavy areas of dampstaining and foxing throughout the book, resulting in some pages sticking together and areas of paper loss. However, Morrison’s page is largely unaffected by the exposure, with only mild dampstaining and rippling to page. This was the second high school Morrison attended, having transferred from Alameda High School in California to George Washington, due to his father being stationed in the Navy. Difficult to find even in in unsigned editions, this copy, boasting a very early Morrison signature, is the…

shamanism & poetry

“This is an interesting thing because this part of the book was written before Jim did anything in rock n’ roll live. This whole thing about shamanism and everything, that was written,  before he did anything in rock, like right after college.. and there’s already that perception of audiences and it’s amazing ‘cause, you know he didn’t sing or do anything yet.” – Pamela on Jim’s poetry

Shot for the documentary ‘Feast of Friends’, this short footage, shows Pamela at the Toronto airport, on 20th April 1968. She can be seen walking with Jim in the airport, with what looks like in one of her hands, a notebook, possibly belonging to Jim.
Even though the footage shot with Pamela, is very short, more footage from the Toronto airport has been shot the same day, both of Jim and the band.

This black and white footage of the band’s arrival at the Toronto International Airport was shot on April 20th, 1968 and includes filmwork of The Doors as they step off the plane, greet fans, and make their way through the terminal. In-flight segments of footage of the band and crew are shot as they travel from New York. Other black and white film segments from this time period may have been shot backstage at the Toronto concert venue, however performance footage does not appear to exist. Alternate 16mm black and white newsreel footage of Jim Morrison shot backstage by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation includes native audio and confirms the date & location of various segments of ‘Feast of Friends’ footage. Babe Hill is present during this filming, recording audio with the Nagra.

Help fund feature film inspired by Jim Morrison’s final days in Paris, “The Last Beat”

The Last Beat

Inspired by Jim Morrison’s final days in Paris, “The Last Beat” is an erotic, lyrical, and music-filled feature film, directed by Sundance alumni Robert Saitzyk.

The Last Beat is a fictional film that attempts to explore the psychology of who Jim Morrison might have been at the end of his life. We don’t want to tell a story about how Morrison might have died in a bathtub or in a club in Paris.

We want to go beyond the idea of celebrity death—this sad obsession with celebrity death our culture seems to have.

We also want to tell a story that delves into the times and have that inform our story as well, and by fictionalizing, I honestly believe we are getting closer to the truth of what might have happened, but more importantly, who this person might have been right at the point he left this…

Jim Morrison’s arrest at the Pussycat-A-Go-Go 1968

There are a lot of places to have a brush with Las Vegas history. You can swing by the Golden Gate, the city’s oldest casino, or spend an afternoon at the Mob Museum. But if you really want a unique encounter with Vegas (and musical) history, there’s only one place to do it, at Hogs & Heifers, a downtown biker bar. On display at the lively bar is a mugshot and arrest report for none other than Jim Morrison, lead singer of “The Doors.”
In 1968, Morrison was arrested in Las Vegas, along with author Robert Gover. The men stopped in at a club called the Pussycat-A-Go-Go, and had a run-in with security, leading to their arrest. The arrest took place on January 28, 1968 at 11:50 p.m. When Hogs & Heifers opened in 2005, the owner, Michelle Dell, put out a call for memorabilia, and the Jim Morrison mugshot and arrest report were among the items donated. The arrest report reveals some fascinating details about Morrison. His physical description says he was 145 pounds, had hazel eyes and “bad complexion.” Morrison was wearing a green coat, purple shirt, black pants and brown shoes.

The following photos were taken at the time The Doors were performing at The Whiskey A Go Go in 1966 and the London Fog. It’s rare to see such great quality vintage photos like this, especially of The London Fog, which is the place they played first before being hired to play at The Whiskey.
